Bridgewater UMC E-Blast January 10, 2025

A Prayer for the New Year 2025

God of the ages, you have blessed us with another year.

Help us to make room for the blessings that
are in store for us in the coming months.

May we be open to learn the right lessons, even if they hurt a little.

Help us to be patient so that we wont miss divine opportunities.

Show us how to be fulfilled without material possessions, so
that we will not miss what it means to be a blessed people.

Enable us to be a blessing so you will recognize us as the ones who
gave you bread when you were hungry,

drink when you were thirsty,

and clothes when you were naked.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Adaptation of a prayer by the Rev. Kevin B. Smalls, go to http://www.umc.org/what-we-believe/downloadable-prayers-for-the-new-year to view downloadable prayers.

Please continue to share the good news that worship time is at 10 AM & invite friends and neighbors to Sunday School at 9 AM and joyful, meaningful worship at 10 AM!

Worship in January is all about beginning a new year focused again on God & following Jesus!  We will start with Epiphany Sunday, celebrating the arrival of the Magi presenting their gifts to Jesus.  Later in the month (TBA) will will have a service to renew our baptism and our membership vows.  Let's grow together in 2025!

Next Sunday, January 19th, we will welcome guest speaker Rev. Dr. Victor Gomez, our Shenandoah River District Superintendent.  He will bring an inspirational message about making disciples of Jesus Christ.  Welcome, Victor!

Blessings, Pastor Mary

Joint Church Council & Finance Meeting

This Monday, January 13 at 6:30 PM (Fellowship Hall)

Dear Council & Finance Members,

Happy New Year and I hope you're staying warm and safe.  I wanted to remind you that we have a Church Council meeting at 6:30 on Monday, Jan 13 in the Fellowship Hall. The Finance Committee will be joining us as well. Please send me your agenda items to dogwoodmountainloghomes@gmail.com.  Agenda items were due Thursday at 5 PM, but please send me any additional thoughts/reports/items this weekend.

Also, please email me or bring your 2025 calendar dates for events and meetings, so we can get them on the church calendar.  We will include them within the agenda for Monday's meeting.

Many thanks,  Scott Ridder

Dear Friends,

This week, someone out there in cyberspace took it upon themselves to text many of my telephone contacts and impersonate me, asking for Apple I-phone gift cards for women cancer patients.  It was from a number with a (202) area code.  My cell area code is a different one.  It was not me.

We will not contact you from church and ask for your help in this way--especially by text message.  Be aware of these scams.  I suggest you block the number, report it as spam, and/or delete the number.  Unfortunately, these and other scams are out there and can be very confusing.

I am very sorry.  The "silver lining" was that I got to talk to many of you and you were very gracious in wanting to help!  I will continue to do everything I can in the future to prevent this from happening again.

Blessings,  Pastor Mary

An Opportunity to Serve:

Help BRC Residents Go to Chapel

We have received word from Laura Powell that Bridgewater Retirement Community is in need of volunteers to help residents in wheelchairs attend chapel on Sunday afternoons.  No experience required -- BRC will train.  The need right now is especially this Sunday, January 12th & 19th.  A brief Wheelchair Training starts 3 PM at Lantz Chapel. Vespers is at 4 PM and you will be done by 5 PM.  If you are interested, please contact the Church Office (adminasst@bridgewaterumc.com or 828-0890) or sign up in the breezeway.  Let's see if we can help meet this need!  Thank you!  Pastor Mary

Thank you from The Society of St. Andrew

~Chesley Vohden, Director of Church Relations~

Thank you BUMC for making The Society of St. Andrew your partner in ending hunger. Through your gift, you shared fresh, nutritious produce with people who simply don't have enough to eat. Your gift helps The Society of St. Andrew continue to work on the frontlines with volunteer gleaners in hands-on mission and service, rescuing food that would have been lost as waste and using it to feed hungry Americans. Through The Society of St. Andrew's network, every $1 given puts 20 servings of healthy food on the tables of people in the greatest need.

Thank you from UMC Global Ministries/UMCOR

Roland Fernandes, General Secretary

The people your church helped with a gift to UMCOR may never have an opportunity to meet you, but if they did their response would likely be "Thank you!" Your financial support serves a vital network of interactive relationships the U.S.A. and 60+ countries in which UMCOR and partnering agencies engage in direct ministries to persons in need. May we continue to reveal the love of God to people of all backgrounds and demonstrate the healing power of the gospel to those who suffer.
